Touring by campervan offers access to some excellent walking locations across the country. After a long hike, put your feet up, have a snack and a nice cup of tea and relax in the comfort of your campervan. Here are a few campsites that offer some great walking possibiliies.
1. Glenmore Campsite, Cairngorms
Location: Aviemore, Inverness-shire
This campsite provides access to numerous hiking trails in the Cairngorms National Park, including routes to mountains like Ben Macdui. There is also direct access to the beaches of Loch Morlich. The area is abundant with wildlife such as deer and otter.
2. Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park, Scottish Highlands
Location: The foot of Ben Nevis, near Fort William
This independent campsite offers stunning views of Ben Nevis and direct access to a variety of hiking trails, including the "Tourist Path" to the summit of Ben Nevis
3. Dale Farm, Peak District
Location: Great Longstone, Derbyshire
Small family run farm and campsite located in the heart of the Peak District countryside. The Monsai Trail and Monsai Head are less than a mile away.
4. Hollands Wood Campsite, New Forest
Location: Brockenhurst Hampshire
This woodland site offers access to numerous walking trails through the New Forest, where you can explore beautiful landscapes and wildlife. The lively village of Brokenhurst is just a short walk away.
5. Housedean Farm Campsite East Sussex
Location: Lewes, East Sussex
A working farm within the South Downs National Park, this campsite offers lots of beautiful walks in the surrounding area. There is no electric hook-up at this campsite, but one of the hot showers is open air!
6. Low Greenside Farm Cumbria
Location: Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria
With access to both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Parks, you are spoilt for choice for scenic walks. The campsite sells a booklet with routes and maps for 9 local circular walks.
7. Treen Farm, Cornwall
Location: St Levan Cornwall
Close to the South West Coast Path, this family run campsite allows easy access to coastal hikes along with breathtaking views of the ocean. There are no advance bookings, so it's "first come, first served" but the tranquility and sea views are worth the risk.
8. Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls, Wales
Location: Gwynedd, Wales
This family friendly campsite is located on the river Nancol. There are 4 curated circular walks that highlight the waterfalls and woodland in the local area. Further afield is Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) to explore.
Tips for Hiking:
• Research Local Trails: Check maps and guides for the best hiking routes in the area. Campsite owners are a great resouce for local information.
• Prepare for all Weathers: Mountain weather can change quickly, so pack accordingly. Its possible to get drenched and sunburned on the same hike. Make sure to bring enough food and water to cover any delays.
• Leave No Trace: Follow the principles of "Leave No Trace" to protect the natural environment.
